Bespoke tailor Zaremba from Warsaw

Warsaw is the home of several shoemakers, who handmake shoes to measure. You will also find a bunch of bespoke tailors of varying quality. Zaremba, though, seems like the real deal.  Located on the corner of Nowogrodzka and Kruzca, Zaremba provides bespoke suits and jackets following Italian and English tradition of fittings, handsewing, fine interlining and no fusing.

Maciej Zaremba, a young man at 32, runs the family business. He took over in 2005, when his father died. Maciej employs four or five cutters and tailors.

I met Maciej in Florence in January. He is a pleasant fellow. He told me that he enjoys to keep an eye on fashions, and that he is very keen to bring Zaremba to speed with younger customers, without loosing the older ones, of course.

I believe the current price for a two-piece suit is around 2.000 Euros.

Warsaw meetings

At my short stay in Warsaw a month ago, I met  Wojtek, mr. Macaroni Tomato. Together with a friend, Tatiana, he recently opened a small shop specializing in classic, yet modern menswear.

I also said hello to brushmaker Khaja, who makes all sort of brushes by hand. He is located on Poznanska.

My stay included a visit to a few shoemakers, among them Jan Kielman.

Sunset shoemaking in Warsaw

Central Europe has been blessed with a strong shoemaker craft. I think it is fair to say that countries like Austria, Hungary and Poland have refined the art of shoemaking to no lesser extent than the English.

However, something is happening. The post WWII masters are getting old, very old. Among four shoemakers in the city of Warsaw, three are at least 80 years old. Moreover, they don’t have an apprentice. When they close, their shop will close.

It leaves the city with Jan Kielman, a fine shoemaker, but a single shop cannot carry a tradition in itself.

Shoemaking by hand is a sunset business in Warsaw.
