How should we define menswear today?
“Smart casual” could be the valid answer. It is a style category, where you make use of classic wardrobe items, yet with a sort of casual elegance. The category contains fine chinos, informal sport coats, nice polo shirts, loafers, scarves, handkerchiefs, but few ties.
Unlike business casual, which is a competition of being the most boringly and harmlessly dressed person on the job, smart casual is about being well-dressed on modern terms.
The stand of Luciano Barbera in Pitti Uomo 90 was an excellent example of smart casual wear. Luciano Barbera managed to establish a stringent casual blend of items, colours, and textures.
Sadly, Mr Barbera was not present himself. For some reason he is never there, when I come around with my camera.
