Perhaps it is not entirely fair to refer to Robert de Niro in Taxi Driver, yet there can be a self-concious attitude at play in Pitti Uomo, which reminds me of the famous de Niro-scene. Above Mr Maro of the shop and consultancy Mararo and his “gang” looking very cool. The wine red raw silk suit and the sky blue jacket are particular striking.

The Long Coat

The impressive ulsters and great coats have disappeared. Most coats today are variations on a barely knee long chesterfield or a pea coat.

The step is logical. I mean, who needs a coat that runs down to the ankles? Long coats don’t fit the car and life in the tube, and they work poorly for bycycling, which so many cities try to promote. Long coats are cut for men strolling weather-hit streets of yesterday.

All the more, it is a pleasure to see long coats today. They tell a story of a way of living that once was.

Don’t forget your shades

I realize that the Pitti Uomo fair in Florence in June is old hat. Nevertheless, I shall stubbornly continue to post my photos from the event. They are handmade one by one, and they take time to bring to market.

In the upper photo, the three-piece summer suit in cotton with club collar and monks. In the lower photo, the green linen suit with neckerchief and suede monks. In addition, we have the navy blue suit with fancy tie and tassel loafers.

All men wear shades.

Subdued and bold in Florence

Nicola-Ricci-The-Journal-of-Style-summerThey are bantamweight sizes but Valentino and Nicola Ricci throw punches like a heavyweight champ in matters of style.

I have often seen Valentino Ricci in subdued colours like blue, grey and brown, whereas Nicola Ricci has displayed bold colours. Last time in Florence was no exception. Valentino Ricci was in a double breasted lightweight houndstooth suit, a blue knit tie and brown suede shoes. Nicola Ricci sported a blue blazer, citron yellow trousers and oxblood captoes.
